Fall 2012 Alumni Spotlight: Alumnus Flattered by Association with New Scholarship Program – Q&A with George Greer ’54

Q: What are your thoughts on Gamma Omega’s new scholarship program?

A: I think it’s really great, and I’m flattered that my brothers wanted to use my name in association with it. It’s always great to have an opportunity to assist the younger guys, especially with the increasing cost of education.

Q: Why would you encourage your brothers to support the program?

A: This is our opportunity to lend a helping hand to our younger brothers and recognize them for their hard work and success. I encourage everyone to think hard about their contribution to the fraternity and particularly this scholarship program. You could really make a difference in someone else’s life.

Q: What does Gamma Omega mean to you as an alumnus?

A: It means a lot. I don’t get to do as much with it anymore, but I certainly have fond memories. I enjoyed my undergraduate years and my time as president of the alumni association. I had the opportunity to meet brothers from all different years and I enjoyed giving back to my fraternity.

Q: What advice can you share with the undergraduate members?

A: I encourage them to approach every day with a purpose and be flexible enough to know when it’s a good time to change directions.

Q: What degree did you earn and what year did you graduate?

A: I earned my bachelor’s degree in 1954 and went to law school at the University of Pennsylvania. I then joined the Army for two years. Afterward, I began working at H.J. Heinz Company as a corporate attorney. I worked there for 37 years and retired in 1997.
